Abandoned Ontario Gothic Farmhouse

This abandoned Ontario Gothic farmhouse was one of those properties that immediately stood out from the road. Built in the late nineteenth century, the red brick home featured classic Gothic Revival elements including steep gables, decorative brickwork, and pointed-arch windows. Although its architectural character could still be appreciated, years of neglect had taken a heavy toll on the property.

As Zenning with Zay & I approached the house, the extent of the decay was impossible to ignore. Sections of the porch had collapsed, many windows had been boarded over, and vegetation had begun to take over the grounds. The once-proud farmhouse was being slowly reclaimed by nature.

Inside, the condition of the home was even worse. Floors had been damaged, ceilings had deteriorated, and debris was scattered throughout many of the rooms. Evidence of frequent visitors was found almost everywhere. A surprisingly large number of bullet casings and shotgun shells were discovered throughout the property, suggesting the house had been used as a target range for years. It was unfortunate to see so much damage inflicted on a home that had survived for well over a century.

Despite the destruction, a few details from the past remained. One bedroom still featured some beautiful old wallpaper that had managed to survive decades of abandonment. The faded patterns provided a glimpse into what the farmhouse may have looked like when it was still occupied. Small reminders like this are often the most interesting part of exploring an abandoned Ontario Gothic farmhouse.

While the house was clearly in rough shape, enough original features remained to showcase the craftsmanship that went into its construction. Even in its deteriorated state, this abandoned Ontario Gothic farmhouse remained an impressive example of Ontario's rural architectural history.

The Boarded Up Abandoned Farmhouse We Hiked Half a Mile To Reach

Finding a boarded up abandoned farmhouse this deep in the woods isn’t something you just stumble across.

Zenning with Zay & I had to hike in over half a mile to reach this place. No driveway access. No visible path. Just pushing through brush and trees until the structure finally appeared through the pines.

And when it did — every single window was sealed.

A Completely Boarded Up Abandoned Farmhouse

Not just a few sheets of plywood here and there. Every window on the house was covered. That usually tells you two things: it’s been vacant for a long time, and at some point someone made a deliberate effort to secure it.

The question is — why?

The house itself appears to date back to the early 1900s. It’s a simple wood-frame rural build with horizontal clapboard siding and a steep front gable. No decorative trim. No elaborate design. Just a practical working farmhouse built to serve a purpose.

A tall exterior brick chimney runs up one side of the home, a reminder of when wood or coal heat would have kept this place warm through harsh winters.

Signs of Long-Term Vacancy

Time hasn’t been kind to this rural abandoned farmhouse.

The paint has faded to a dull grey. The small covered front porch is sagging and partially collapsing inward. The lower section of the structure is beginning to deteriorate more heavily, suggesting moisture damage over the years.

Interestingly, the roof still appears mostly intact. This doesn’t look like a sudden collapse situation. It feels more like a slow decline — maintenance stopped, seasons passed, and nature gradually started reclaiming it.

Surrounding the house are tall pines and thick overgrowth, giving it that isolated backwoods setting. Off to the right sits a small outbuilding with a rusted metal roof, likely once used for tools or storage. It’s barely holding together now.

Why Was It Sealed Shut?

A sealed abandoned farmhouse always raises questions.

Was the property tied up in estate issues?
Did the last owner pass away?
Was it sold and forgotten?
Or was it simply too far gone to save?

Boarding up every window suggests someone didn’t want easy access. Whether that was to prevent vandalism, liability issues, or something else entirely — we may never know.

A Working Farmhouse, Now Sitting Empty

What stands out most about this abandoned farmhouse in the woods is how practical it was. This wasn’t a mansion. It wasn’t designed to impress. It was built for everyday rural life.

You can picture it decades ago — yard maintained, smoke coming from the chimney, equipment stored in the shed, daily routines playing out inside those now-covered windows.

Today, it sits quiet behind plywood and trees.

Reaching it took effort. And standing in front of it, you can’t help but wonder how something that likely housed generations could end up sealed and left behind.

This abandoned farmhouse stands as one of the last reminders of when this part of Ontario was still largely rural. Built in the early 1900s, the home reflects Edwardian-era design, with subtle Queen Anne influences that were common for farmhouses of that time. Brick construction, a balanced layout, and modest decorative details point to a practical family home rather than anything ornate.

The property was once part of a working farm and remained occupied for decades as the surrounding area slowly changed. As development pushed closer, the farmhouse was eventually left behind. Today, it sits empty while newer subdivisions and commercial growth continue around it.

The house is clearly abandoned, and at some point after it was left vacant, there was evidence that a squatter had been living inside. This is not unusual for isolated properties like this, especially those left unsecured for long periods. Signs of temporary occupancy were present, adding another layer to the building’s recent history.

Despite its condition, the structure still shows why it mattered enough to be noticed. As an Abandoned 1900s Edwardian Farmhouse, it represents a period when farming shaped the area long before modern expansion. Its survival, even in a neglected state, makes it an interesting contrast to the development happening around it.

Whether the farmhouse is preserved or eventually altered, it remains a physical link to the regions early agricultural roots — one that quietly tells the story of how quickly landscapes can change once land use shifts.

Exploring an Abandoned 1860s House

From the road, this Abandoned 1860s House looks like a typical red-brick farmhouse that has been left behind for years. The tall windows, solid brick construction, and squared stone corner details all point to mid-19th-century craftsmanship. The simple gabled roofline and later additions match the way rural homes of that era were expanded over time.

Up close, the age of the structure becomes even more obvious. Vines run across the brick, the trim is faded, and the yard has grown wild. The house carries that quiet, untouched feeling that comes from being empty for a long time.

Inside, the layout reflects the practical design of an Abandoned 1860s House—tight hallways, uneven floors, and rooms that seem to have been added as needed. Original wood trim, old door hardware, and hand-cut ceiling beams show how much of the early character is still there. It’s straightforward architecture, but built to last.

The biggest shock came in one of the back rooms. Instead of plain plaster or peeling paint, the walls were covered in murals of the sky, stars, and outer space. The entire room felt like a personal escape someone created within this old farmhouse, completely different from the rest of the interior. It stood out as the most unexpected part of the house.

That room gave the place a strange mix of history and imagination—19th-century construction blended with artwork that looked like it came from a completely different world. It’s the kind of find that makes an Abandoned 1860s House memorable long after stepping outside again.

We’d had our eye on this place for quite some time, and when we finally got a closer look, it was hard not to feel a mix of fascination and disappointment. This Abandoned Castle House was lived in up until 2020, when it sold to an investor for $1.3 million. After that, it hit the market three separate times in 2021, each listing lasting only a couple of weeks. Since then, it’s been sitting completely empty—and what’s happened to it since is rough to see.

Scrappers have torn through the place, cutting holes in the floors to get at copper pipes, ripping out baseboard heaters, and stripping wiring from the walls. Years of neglect and vandalism have taken their toll, leaving behind what’s now just a shadow of the impressive home it once was.

What makes this one stand out, though, is its design. The house had a castlesque look that made it unlike anything else in the area. Inside, there was a massive “party room” with high ceilings and a spiral staircase—a space that must’ve hosted some wild gatherings back in the day. You could tell this wasn’t your typical suburban home; it was built with personality and flair.

Now, the Abandoned Castle House sits empty, scarred by time and neglect. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change—one day a million-dollar home, the next a target for scrappers and decay.
