Back in the Spring of 2024, I was out on a road trip with Freaktography & one of our stops was this Abandoned Historic Synagogue!




A Grand Synagogue Forgotten: The Legacy of a Sacred Space

Amidst quiet streets and shifting neighborhoods stands a remarkable structure that once served as a spiritual beacon for a thriving Jewish community. Though no longer a synagogue, this architectural gem remains a powerful symbol of religious devotion, cultural identity, and the American immigrant experience.

A Monument of Faith

In the early 20th century, as Jewish communities across the country expanded and prospered, one congregation commissioned a new house of worship — a striking Byzantine Revival building, designed to accommodate thousands. With its towering dome, intricate stained glass, and marble accents, it became not only a religious sanctuary but a center of community life, education, and celebration.

The building reflected both permanence and aspiration, embodying the deep roots its congregants were planting in American soil.




A Voice That Carried Far

For nearly four decades, the synagogue was led by a refugee from Nazi Germany — a charismatic rabbi who became one of the leading moral voices of his time. A passionate advocate for civil rights, he reminded his congregants that silence in the face of injustice was a betrayal of both Jewish values and human dignity.

His legacy reached beyond the pulpit, culminating in a historic speech delivered just moments before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" at the March on Washington in 1963.

From One Faith to Another

In time, as many urban Jewish communities relocated to the suburbs, the congregation made the difficult decision to leave its beloved home. But the building’s story did not end there. It was embraced by a Pentecostal Christian church, which preserved its beauty and breathed new life into its sanctuary.

While the symbols changed, the spirit of worship endured. The space continued to echo with prayer, music, and the gathering of faithful hearts.

Remembering Through Architecture

Though its original congregation has long since moved on, the former synagogue remains a testament to a rich chapter of spiritual and social history. It stands as a reminder of a time when communities built not only with stone and steel, but with hope, purpose, and unity.

The Forgotten Treasure of Gary: American State Bank

In 2020 I went on a road trip with Freaktography to Gary Indiana.  One of the locations we explored was thi old abandoned bank!  Standing as a silent witness to Gary, Indiana’s rise and fall, the Abandoned American State Bank is a hauntingly beautiful relic of the city’s past. Built in 1926, this grand neoclassical building was once a symbol of prosperity, reflecting Gary’s booming steel industry. The bank served as a financial hub for the rapidly growing city, catering to steelworkers, business owners, and residents who believed in a bright future.

However, like much of Gary, the bank’s fate was tied to the steel industry’s decline. The Great Depression hit hard, and the American State Bank closed its doors in 1931, just five years after opening. Since then, the building has stood abandoned, its ornate columns and intricate stonework slowly succumbing to time and neglect.

Over the decades, the bank has been a magnet for urban explorers and photographers, drawn to its decayed elegance. Inside, remnants of teller windows, grand chandeliers, and marble floors still whisper stories of a bygone era. Despite various proposals to restore it, the building remains a ghost of Gary’s golden days—an eerie yet captivating monument to the city’s economic shifts.

At the beginning of 2024, Zenning with Zay & I visited The Abandoned Sattler Theater!  I had been exploring Buffalo for over a decade but never explored this one until now!

The Abandoned Sattler Theater, located on Buffalo's East Side, was once a vibrant part of the city's cultural landscape. Opened in 1914 by businessman John G. Sattler, the theater was originally built to showcase vaudeville performances and silent films. Its grandeur and ornate design attracted large audiences, making it a key entertainment hub for Buffalo residents during its early years.

However, as the decades passed, the rise of television and suburbanization contributed to the theater's decline. In the 1950s, the Sattler Theater transitioned into a movie house under new management, but it struggled to maintain its former glory. By the 1980s, the theater was shuttered and left abandoned, its doors closed to the public.

Today, the Sattler Theater stands in a state of disrepair, a shadow of its former self. The once-majestic structure has fallen victim to the elements and time. Its roof has deteriorated, and the interior is marred by crumbling walls, shattered windows, and debris. Efforts to preserve or restore the building have been sporadic, and while there is hope for its revival, the site remains a hazard.

Exploring the Sattler Theater is extremely dangerous. The building's structural integrity is compromised, and it poses significant risks to those who venture inside. Safety concerns have made it a focal point for discussions around urban decay and the challenges of revitalizing neglected historical landmarks. While the theater's future is uncertain, its past continues to echo through the abandoned halls.

The Abandoned Essex County Jail in Newark, New Jersey, was established in 1837. This historic site was once a bustling correctional facility. Now, it stands abandoned, surrounded by overgrown vegetation and crumbling walls.  In March of 2024, Freaktography & I went to check it out!

The jail was designed by John Haviland, a prominent architect. Its design was influenced by the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Over the years, expansions were made to accommodate more inmates. In the early 20th century, additional buildings were added to the complex.

For decades, the Essex County Jail housed inmates from various backgrounds. Its cells were often overcrowded, leading to poor living conditions. The facility was eventually closed in 1971. Since then, it has remained abandoned and neglected.

Vandalism and decay have taken a toll on the Essex County Jail. Graffiti covers many walls, and windows have been shattered. The site's eerie atmosphere attracts urban explorers and photographers. Despite its dilapidated state, the jail's architectural beauty still shines through.

Efforts to preserve and repurpose the Essex County Jail have been discussed. However, no concrete plans have been implemented. The site's future remains uncertain, with debates on its potential redevelopment.

The jail's history offers a glimpse into the past of Newark's correctional system. Its abandonment reflects broader issues in urban decay and neglect. Many hope the site will be preserved as a historical landmark.

Visiting the Essex County Jail is not recommended due to safety concerns. Structural instability and potential hazards pose significant risks. Nonetheless, its story continues to fascinate those interested in forgotten places.

In conclusion, the Essex County Jail in Newark, New Jersey, stands as a relic of the past. Its abandoned state tells a story of a once-important institution now left to the ravages of time.  I do enjoy exploring Abandoned places in America!

In early 2024 Zenning with Zay & I explored this beautiful Abandoned Historic Hotel! It was a very cold day, but an amazing start to the year!

This once-grand Abandoned Historic Hotel, located in the heart of a city in New York State, stands as a silent monument to a bygone era. Opened in 1925, the hotel was celebrated for its opulence and quickly became a favored destination for travelers and dignitaries alike. Its storied history includes visits from some of the most notable figures of the 20th century.

Throughout its heyday, the Hotel hosted a variety of illustrious guests. Among them were Marilyn Monroe, who stayed during the filming of a movie in 1953, and esteemed American composer Irving Berlin. Additionally, Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio were also counted among its visitors, adding to the hotel’s rich tapestry of notable patrons.

Despite its illustrious past, the hotel fell into decline in the latter half of the 20th century. Changing travel patterns and the economic downturn in the area contributed to its eventual closure. By the early 2000s, the Hotel was abandoned, its once-luxurious halls left to decay.

Efforts to restore the hotel have been undertaken multiple times, yet each has faced insurmountable challenges. In the mid-2000s, a plan was set in motion to revitalize the property, aiming to return it to its former glory as a luxury destination. Unfortunately, the financial crisis of 2008 halted these efforts. Subsequent attempts to attract investment and support for restoration have also been unsuccessful. Issues such as funding shortfalls, bureaucratic hurdles, and the daunting cost of repairs have rendered these plans unfeasible.

Today, the Abandoned Historic Hotel stands as a poignant reminder of the past. Its grand architecture, though faded, still evokes the glamour of a different era. While restoration efforts have stalled, the hotel remains an object of fascination for urban explorers and history enthusiasts alike. The story of the Hotel is one of both grandeur and decline, a testament to the ever-changing fortunes of time.
