As Zenning with Zay & I were heading to our camping spot for the night we spotted this Collapsing Abandoned House!  Right at magic hour & after some heavy rains we decided it was checking out!

The Abandoned Relic

Cape Breton's Collapsing Abandoned House, with its timeworn façade, appears to be straight out of a ghost story. Over the years, it has succumbed to the harsh Canadian elements, leaving one wall in ruins. As we venture deeper into its decaying interior, we can't help but marvel at the remnants of a life that once thrived within these walls.



Nature's Unyielding Power

The house's perilous state serves as a vivid illustration of nature's relentless power. Here, in the heart of Cape Breton, the elements reign supreme. Each gust of wind and every drop of rain inch the structure closer to its ultimate collapse. This once vibrant home now stands as a fragile testament to the might of Mother Nature.

This Abandoned Mountain Home was a discovery by Zenning with Zay.  I was surprised she spotted it through the trees as I hadn't noticed a thing!  She definitely has a eye for abandoned places!

Firstly this place was super picturesque!  Nestled in the mountains with greenery as far as you can see.  The old, weathered exterior made for some awesome shots!







Once inside I notice how rustic the home was. No frills, just the basics.  But, it was quite a surprise when I found a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom!  Additionally, it was clear this place was quit old by the construction.





The main room or living room was pretty cozy & even had a deer head & hooves as wall decor.  I was actually surprised to see the head still there as it is a nice piece!  So nice that I had to take a selfie with it!  Lastly we cannot forget that super creepy doll.  Not sure why but dolls found in abandoned places are automatically creepier!





Upstairs the Abandoned Mountain Home was sad.  It seemed that all the children's belongings were left behind.  This is something that we have come across many times before but it always is strange to me.   Why would all these children's things just be left.  Did the kid outgrow them or was it something else?  Either way we are left with unanswered questions which often happens.

During our last day on Cape Breton we came across this 1900s Historic Abandoned Mansion!  It was pouring rain but that didn't stop us!  Opie slept in the car while Zenning with Zay & I explored this beautiful old place!



The Grand Beginning: Early 1900s

Built in the early 1900s, The House was commissioned by the esteemed Hunt family, who were prominent figures in the local community. The mansion, with its imposing facade and intricate architectural details, quickly became an emblem of their wealth & influence. The construction of the house was overseen by Tom Burke, who painstakingly designed every aspect of the structure.  He was given $500 to pay the wages of the tradesmen of the construction.  Additionally, he was given $2,000.00 for the actually materials.

A Mansion of Extravagance & Parties

During its heyday, this mansion served as a vibrant hub of social activity. The family regularly hosted extravagant parties and gatherings, attracting the region's elite. Wealthy businessmen, politicians, and artists graced the halls of the mansion, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and music.  Also to note, there were the two births of Hunt children however the eldest passed after six months.  There were three wakes & a wedding held here.


An Uncertain Future

Over time, changes in ownership, economics, and living patterns altered the role of the house. After the passing of the final resident, the property became vacant and was no longer regularly maintained. While there were periods of interest in preservation, those efforts eventually stopped, and natural deterioration began to take hold. Its grandeur overshadowed by the passage of time. The once-manicured gardens grew wild, and the once-gleaming halls echoed with a haunting silence.


A Glimpse Into The Past

Today, this 1900s Historic Abandoned Mansion stands as a fascinating relic of the past, attracting curious visitors seeking to unravel its secrets. Despite the years of neglect, traces of its former grandeur can still be found. Weathered stone walls tell tales of joy and mirth, while faded tapestries whisper stories of the people who once called this place home.  After the passing of the last owner, the house was left abandoned.   Although there were some attempts at preservation, those efforts have stopped & decay slowly takes over.

This Cape Breton Time Capsule was a lucky find by Zenning with Zay!  We had just finished at another house when all of a sudden Zay spotted something.   We turned around in hope that we found another abandoned house! As we approached I wasn't sure we'd get in, but was hopeful.





As I stepped through the door straightaway I was amazed with what we found! A time capsule! It was nice to find a intact place unlike the last few we explored.   Firstly, it was a rustic place but undeniably cozy!  It seems likely it was a cottage or hunt camp or possibly could have even been a seasonal home.   In light of it being so close to the ocean, coupled with some traps, I concluded it was likely a fisherman's place.





The outside was all done in cedar shake. Something that we saw a lot of out there. Clearly it's tough stuff as this place was holding up strong! Then out back we found an old washer/dryer unit! Pretty cool thing. Then Zay spotted the out house & in this case it was appropriately named!





The upstairs was super cool but also sketchy.  I could see the floor sagging from all sides towards the middle.  I was extra cautious up here but I am sure it was safe.  There were two bedrooms & then a weird area with a bed.  It was the corridor/relacing area.  I loved the old bedframes!





Another key point was that the Cape Breton Time Capsule looked small on the outside.  But it really opened up once inside!  The main floor certainly had a huge living & fining room.  There was also a large bathroom & a back storage room.  Pretty cool but not surprising to find the old lobster trap!  We found more of those the more we explored the province.





I enjoyed this house, especially the kitchen! So many original items left behind. It was very rustic but I loved it. Reminded of simpler times!  All in all it was a great explore.

This Cape Breton Abandoned House was our first explore on the island!  Zenning with Zay & I were looking for a place to camp when we came across this place.  We decided to camp at another spot beside the Atlantic Ocean but would come back to explore it!





On this road trip we didn't have any abandoned places on our map to check out.  We know what the East Coast has to offer.   So we planned on checking everything that looked interesting!   We did stumble across the Abandoned Doctor's House which we both recognized.  But we didn't plan on it!   Everything was just randomly found!





The decay in here was pretty amazing! The house was almost completely hidden from view & likely would have been once the trees were full. Funny thing too was we were looking for public land access but found this instead!





Upstairs in the Cape Breton Abandoned House was plenty of decay!  I was a bit worried about the floors but all was well.  Just had to take it slow & feel my way around.  The upstairs was mostly empty however there was a sweet old rocking chair.  That & the table in made for a nice scene!   As much as I like Abandoned Time Capsules, I always appreciate a classic decayed farm house!  This one definitely delivered but things were just starting!
